ESSENTIAL FORMULATION: Oil-Based Products and Aqueous Sprays

With Lise Andersen and Robert Tisserand

How many times have you poured a liquid balm into a container to set – its surface smooth as glass – only to find later that it’s gone grainy or is dotted with hard waxy nubs? Have you ever wondered how to write a proper formula or add 0.15% of antioxidant to a product? Should you be adding essential oils straight into your bath salts or facial mist? (Hard no.)

This insightful course is for anyone looking to formulate anhydrous moisturizers, aqueous mists, bath products, and masks. Whether you’re an aromatherapy practitioner striving to create professional bases for your therapeutic blends, or a cosmetic formulator aiming to make luxurious products, this eight-week online certification course is for you.

During seven fascinating lessons, expert cosmetic formulator Lise Andersen will share her passion, know-how and professional techniques for creating silken whips, balms, serums, mists and more. You’ll explore the pros and pitfalls of several plant oils, waxes and butters, and discover how and where to procure the right equipment and fresh, raw ingredients.

You’ll also take part in one module on Essential Oil Blending live with Robert Tisserand. Offered in week two, Robert will personally guide you in creating safe and beautifully scented therapeutic and cosmeceutical blends for adding to your formulations.

As well as gaining the proper methodology for custom formulating, you’ll get dozens of smart tested formulas, including essential oil blends designed by Robert. Stop relying on dubious DIY recipes that are potentially ineffective or unsafe, and confidently create your own sound formulations.

About your Tutor: Lise Andersen

Natural Cosmetic Formulator and Author

Although she started making skincare products in her teens, professional cosmetics formulator Lise Andersen is still so smitten with developing and creating cosmetics that she refers to herself as a ‘compulsive formulator’.

For many artisan formulators, ‘LisaLise’ needs no introduction. For the uninitiated, Lise is founder of LisaLise Pure Natural Skincare. Her a passion for plant-based ingredients – preferably as raw and unprocessed as possible – places her solidly on the ‘green’ side of the formulating fence.

Lise is also the founder of Formulators Kitchen, the home base for a team that offers over 100 years of combined formulating experience. And there’s the insightful LisaLiseBlog.com where she has been journaling her experiments and sharing her know-how on everything from making no-soap cleansers to pressed eye shadow since 2010.

She is the author of several reliable DIY e-books on making personal care products – all of her formulas go through rigorous testing to ensure they are as foolproof as possible. Titles cover shampoo bars to making herbal extracts for cosmetics to the holy grail chased down by formulators the world over: understanding how to successfully work with shea butter.

Entirely self-taught, Lise has years of experience with researching, testing and developing cosmetics. Lise also offers bespoke products, custom formulation for beauty brands, and personal consultation.

About your Tutor: Robert Tisserand

Robert has been teaching others how to use essential oils for more than 40 years, and his first formulated products were created in 1974. He was an early pioneer of using Lavender as a product concept for skin soothing and calming products and has created more than 100 commercial aromatherapy formulations. He was the first innovator outside of Australia to commit to the use of Tea Tree oil in natural products, developing a shampoo, and created several award-winning products, including a deodorant and a body wash.

In recent years he has inspired live audiences in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Japan on topics ranging from therapeutic action to the dynamic relationship between plant oils and the skin.

Robert wrote the first book in English on the subject of aromatherapy: The Art of Aromatherapy (1977). He was privileged to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award in Denver in 2007, and in 2014 he co-authored the second edition of Essential Oil Safety, a 780-page book that sets industry standards for the safe use of essential oils.

In 1988 he founded the Tisserand Institute in London. In 2015 he relaunched it as a one-of-a-kind online learning portal for evidence-based education on the potency and potential of essential oils for human wellbeing.

What previous students say about our courses:

After working with essential oils for 32 years I’m fairly confident in my knowledge, but I have learned quite a bit from this class. Very impressed and grateful to Robert and Hana & Co. for all your work!

Dana Gass

Thank you! The course was fantastic! I will refer to it often, and, am already trying out some of the blends.

Nancy Scott, Your Content Goes Here

Thank you for such a wonderful and informative class! I have learned an abundance of wonderful information to not only help me to help others, but also to be able share my newly attained knowledge to help others better understand EO safety. I’m hoping for more of these in the future as I expand my knowledge of Aromatherapy! Thank you again! Blessings to all!

Lisa Macy

I wanted to thank you so much for this class! It was wonderfully organized and I looked forward to it every week. I really appreciate all your efforts to bring essential oil safety awareness to everyone. I am constantly referring to your book in my store and recommend it to all of my students. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am really looking forward to future classes!

Natalie Hajdu-Voakes

Thank you so much for your presentation and gathering of all the research available. I have learned so much because when you are running a business you don’t always have a lot of time to keep on top of all the research. I will be adding couple of essential oils to my formulas. Once again thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us.

Jenny Simon, Your Content Goes Here

I had taken the Safety Masterclass and wanted to thank you and Robert for all the information and material that you put together for us. This kind of functional information is very helpful and makes the journey into the fragrant world of essential oils coherent and easier to navigate. Thank you for all your efforts.

Anshika Goel

I want to thank you and Robert for all the effort that went into putting this invaluable webinar together.  For years, I have had inaccurate or incorrect information about essential oil safety, having relied on the information I found in aromatherapy reference books, various sites on the Internet and large essential oil companies.  I am so happy I finally have a greater depth of understanding about what I have discovered to be a quite complex subject. Apart from the content of the webinar, the logistics and online resources for the class were very well organized and easy to use.  I plan on taking additional classes in the future.

Lorraine Wolfangel-Hall

Dear Hana, Robert and Team,

I thoroughly enjoyed this course! I had many conflicts in my schedule but you and your team set everything up to be as easily accessed by computer as possible. Hearing the Q&A as well as the print outs was also a real bonus. I learned many new things I was unfamiliar with and those are the real value!!

Thanks and again and many blessings to you all.

Sara Holmes

Even though I have been in Aromatherapy for more than 30 years, I learned some wonderful things from your webinar and can not wait until the next one is available. Thank you so much!

FAQ

For level 1 (Fundamental Chemistry) each lesson will be released on Tuesday starting January 7. They are recorded so you can watch them at any time you want.

For level 2 (Molecular Dynamics) the lessons will be live on Tuesdays starting February 4. Afterwards a recording will be posted so you can watch later if you cannot attend live, or you can rewatch as many times as you need.

Not a problem. Each live webinar lesson will be recorded so you can watch it later, and you will be able to ask questions through our learning portal. The recordings will be available to you for the remainder of the course, plus an extra four weeks after the last lesson.

Yes. Each lesson comes with printable handouts of the slides used in the lesson, and additional lesson notes. These are sent to you before each lesson and are for you to keep and refer to at any time.

Many of our students have commented that our courses helped them grasp what they learned elsewhere in more detail, or complemented their previous education. Some of our students are lifelong learners, and some are teachers.

We will let one of our previous students answer this one:

“The information presented is appropriate for all levels, and although I am just beginning my aromatherapy journey it all makes sense.”

Each weekly lesson is followed by a multiple choice quiz, and there is a summary test at the end of each of the two courses. Passing both the weekly quizzes and the final tests is a requirement for certification.

There will be live Q&As after each of the live lessons in Molecular Dynamics. You can ask questions any time for both the courses on our online platform.

Absolutely! In addition to the live Q&A sessions, you can post your questions in the dedicated student forums.

For level 1 (Fundamental Chemistry) the weekly lessons are recorded so you can view them any time from their release. For level 2 (Molecular Dynamics) the lessons are first done as live webinars, and then posted as recordings.

You will have access to all the recordings and course materials for four weeks weeks after the last lesson, so up to the end of March 2020. All the printable materials (notes, handouts, charts, etc.) are of course yours to keep for reference forever.

Because we have students from all over the world and of many professions we are not able to offer credits for specific organizations – there are simply too many. However, we issue a confirmation of CE hours gained on the course that you can apply with your professional organization and will be happy to assist with any additional documentation.

We have found that running classes on specific dates works best to help you finish a program. You join a class of students, and learn along with them. Many students help each other with queries, and of course our tutors are there too. That said, if you miss a few classes you should be still able to comfortably jump right back in and if you do fall behind you can request extra time. Of course this cannot be indefinite, but we do our best to help you get your certificate.
