A study of Sandalwood inhalation and its effects on the autonomous nervous system (ANS) showed an increase in heart rate and blood pressure after 20 minutes of inhaling the essential oil through a breathing mask. This finding is in conflict with other studies, showing a sedative effect of Sandalwood oil when administered transdermally or by inhalation in lower concentration.
The authors concluded that the increase in ANS activity is due to trigeminal nerve stimulation. This is not a therapeutic stimulation, but a physiological reaction to a substance that has become an irritant due to over-exposure.
